In what seems to be a busy week for officers actually facing some sort of accountability, or maybe it just feels that way with A COP actually being charged with murder, the video above shows a cop, who’s now facing an internal investigation, threatening to make teenagers a statistic. According to KHQ.com:
A Kennewick Police officer is under investigation after video of him yelling at three teenagers during a traffic stop spread through social media this week.
Officer Glenn Ball, a 21 year veteran of the police force, pulled over the three young men for possibly drag racing and one of the teens began recording the interaction on his cell phone. The teen who uploaded the video, Omar Abarca, said the officer came up to them while their car was parked and was rude from the beginning.
“I got mad when he told me to sit on the curb, if he would have asked me a different way or approached me or even told me ‘hands where I can see them’…once he told me to sit on the curb with a certain attitude or a certain way you approach me…I get mad,” Arbaca told KHQ’s sister station KNDU.
“We don’t have a quota. We have expectations. And what that means is ‘you will make so many arrests a month. You should write so many tickets a month. And you should haul so many dumbasses to jail a month. If we’re going to pay you $100,000 a year, then we should expect something back from you. Shouldn’t we? Right?” Officer Ball responds when the teens inquire about his “monthly quota.”
“So would you like to be apart (sic) of my monthly quota tonight?” Ball continued.
When asked by one of teens, “On what grounds?”, Ball responds, “Oh I don’t know. I’ll think of something. How about aid (sic) and abetting reckless driving?… You better wipe that smile off your face or I’ll show ya.”
“Now let me tell you the difference between being a dumbass and being a smart guy is. You sit there with a S***-eating grin on your face, let’s see your I.D.,” Ball is recorded saying. When the teenager complies and says he has a clean record, Ball responds, “Yeah, but you know what? I’m the guy that can make that record look dirty. So be smart. Be respectful. Have a seat.”
After one of the teenagers asks for the officer’s name, Ball responds, “Be quiet or you’ll have my name all over a police report and your ass will be on your way to juvie.”
The Kennewick Police Department told KNDU Officer Ball’s comments are not consistent with the department’s values or with their expectations on how officer should interact with the public.
Nobody was cited during the traffic stop and Officer Ball remains on active duty during an internal investigation.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “FILM THE POLICE.” Don’t wait for the police to act stupid, it could be too late. If these kids would have decided to leave the camera off, the bullish attitude of this cop would have continued on. Sure they didn’t receive citations this time, but I doubt this would have been their last interaction or harassment from Glenn Ball, or his co-workers. Especially, with his $100,000 salary that he’s expected to give something back for, like victimless crime tickets, so the department can justify its existence.
