The video above was sent to CopBlock.org via the submission tab by Cody Lewis, who states:
While traveling in Florida, a State Trooper pulled me over for speeding. I asked multiple tim
es for the trooper’s name and badge number, but he never responded once. Then, he asked if there were any weapons and I said, “yes.” When the other troopers pulled up they said the reason they wanted to take the gun is because it’s visible, but it was never visible until I showed them. The other troopers walked up with hands on their guns ready to draw them. I made it clear that they can’t take my weapon or open my door. When I wasn’t looking the trooper reached in the window and opened it. After I turned around he reached for my camera and I said, “don’t take it.” They violated many rights and that is not OK. The entire stop took a total of 23:00 minutes, just for a traffic stop.
I think Cody makes some very valid points in this video. He mentions to the officers that he didn’t have to inform him that he was carrying and that all this has taught him is to not tell officers in the future. He also points out how all of the officers on scene have a firearm and he’s not scared, so why are they? Cody and the driver continue to ask what statute the officers are using to take his property. Yet, nearly all their questions fall on deaf ears.
Cody really drives the point home when he says, “This is what a police state looks like.” Something I say repeatedly at CopBlock (and a sticker you can buy in the CopBlock.org Store) and is highlighted in this entire video. These officers aren’t following any law, they are merely over reacting and it’s a direct reaction to the training officers receive. Police are taught that everyone is dangerous, instead of assessing the situation and reacting logically, they continually violate the rights of Cody and his friend. This just leaves them with a bad taste in their mouths and furthers the lack of respect people (rightfully) have these days towards LEOs.
What are your thoughts? Should the gun be taken away? If so, should officers give up their firearms too? Let me know in the comments below.
