After signing a deal with solar developer SunEdison for 150 megawatts, the City is now prepared to service everyone’s electric needs from either wind or solar power.
Officials in the city of 54,000 people have said the decision was based more on cost than on environmental impact. In addition receiving a lower rate than the city currently pays, the rate is locked in until 2041. The long term contract will help Georgetown avoid any rate spikes as energy costs become more expensive in Texas and across the county.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Georgetown is among only 12 municipalities that have committed to becoming 100% renewable.
