Blood of Aussies shed to give Jews freedom, says Zionist

South African journalist Stan Goodenough has been living in Israel for years, working as a journalist covering the peace process. He says Australia is right in maintaining its support of Israel, rather than recognising Palestine.

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott is being urged to hold the line in his support of Israel by a veteran journalist who says the ANZACs shed blood to pave the way for Jewish people’s freedom.

South African journalist Stan Goodenough, who has covered the Middle East peace process for 25 years, said Christians should be writing to Mr Abbott and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to applaud their pro-Israeli stance.

Speaking at a Sunshine Coast church on Sunday, Mr Goodenough said just six weeks ago he was at Beersheba, in the Negev desert, where the sacrifice of ANZACs in 1917 was being applauded as pivotal in paving the formation of the Israeli state in 1948.

Some 800 light horsemen captured Beersheba from the Turks, opening the way for the liberation of Jerusalem, taking it out from Islamic control, and freeing it up so the Jews could come home, he said.

“Now that same land that your boys bled and died for is being offered back to the Muslim world and not to a peace-loving Arab world, who want to make oil cheap for everyone, but a violent entity,” Mr Goodenough said.

“The question that can legitimately be asked… is how do you feel about the sacrifice that your grandparents made is now being reversed and they died in vain…

“Every Australian should stand up and say ‘Whoa, wait a minute.”

The viewpoints have been condemned by supporters of Palestine, who describe Mr Goodenough’s comments as racist, unfair and inaccurate.

RESPONSE IN FULL FROM PALESTINE SUPPPORTERS

Mr Goodenough said Australia was right in arguing that Jewish settlements were not illegal under international law and that it should not formally recognise Palestine.

He was speaking on the Sunshine Coast as part of a tour of Australian churches where he is rallying support for Australian not to fold to international pressure. He has also spoken at Toowoomba.

History had shown those countries who has supported Israel had prospered while those who opposed it had been cursed, he said.

Mr Goodenough said the US’ recent decline was evidence of the fact that it had waned in its support of the Jewish people, especially under President Barack Obama.

He said the two-state ‘solution’ would give mountain territory overlooking the Israeli land to Palestine.

Some 80% of the population of Israel lived in strip of land, just 13 kilometres wide at its narrowest point.

“They would all be under the rocket fire.”

“We are now talking about multiplying the (current) threat (in Gaza) 1000 times plus – right over our cities, right over our international airport, everything is in range.”

Mr Goodenough said history had shown that each time Israel gave up land, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) had used it to launch further attacks.
